I’ve been playing around a lot with my new cellphone, the HTC Touch Pro, lately. This includes trying new applications and services. From time to time I will share one I might think you would be interested in and I want to be able to remember for future reference.
Many people are familiar with sites like speedtest.net or wugnet.com, which test the speed of your internet connection. The problem is that these sites rely on Flash and don’t work for mobile phones, which have mobile browser that have limited or no support for Flash.
I found a site that is made just for testing the speed of your mobile connection through your mobile browser. The site is ran by dslreports.com, which is an excellent source of information about internet providers. I ran the test and ended up with a download speed of 348 Kbps and a latency of . 275 seconds. The download speed is pretty decent, better than many low end DSL connections. The speedtest also shows information about the phone’s connection; like service provider, IP address, DNS, and browser information. All kinds of cool nerd shit.
To find dslreport’s mobile speed test on your mobile browser just enter “mobile browser speed test” in google and it’s the first link you encounter. I’d be interested in the download speeds and latency of your connection, especially those of you in other areas with different mobile carriers and connection types. I’m using Alltel in Northern Michigan with an EVDO connection.
