12th-Mar-2008 04:00 pm - Jeff Buckley
"On March 7, 2008, Buckley’s version of the Leonard Cohen song, “Hallelujah”, went to number 1 on the iTunes chart after being performed by Jason Castro on the seventh season of the television series American Idol.[93]"

Wow, that's disgusting on many levels. What an amazing song and it took American Idol to make it #1?
Go out and buy the album "Grace" if you don't already own it.
31st-Jan-2008 02:01 pm - Muzak
I need some music recommendations. I'm so outside of the loop on what's in these days, or at least good. To give you an idea of what I'm into, these are some of the bands on my zune that I think represent my tastes:

Screeching Weasel, Beck, Guided By Voices, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, Public Enemy, Gravediggaz, Minutemen, Jeff Buckley, Jane's Addiction, Eels, Hank Williams III, The Toadies, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Ween, A Perfect Circle, Tegan & Sara, Rocket from the Crypt.

Recommend my preciouses! I really haven't gotten anything new since 2006.
19th-Nov-2007 11:51 am - Zooooon!
pic111907_2.jpg

I scored a 30GB Zune from woot.com for $85 last week! I just got it on Saturday and it completely kicks ass. This is a first generation Zune, which had some problems, but thankfully Microsoft upgraded the firmware for these players to the new second generation player firmware. The new Zunes, and upgraded firmware 1st gen Zunes, are being pretty universally lauded as being a solid competitor to the ipod.
I don't have much experience with newer color ipods, but the Zune has a great color screen. Everyone I've shown it to has been amazed with the quality of the screen and the quality of the video. The podcasts integration, which was added in the new firmware, works well. The size is pretty decent. It's a little big and a little heavy, but not too bad.
There are some shitty things about the Zune. The Zune comes with a program that imitates itunes. The list of podcasts in their marketplace is very barebones. Not a whole lot is listed beyond the big podcasts. Luckily, the program allows you to added the url of any podcast that isn't available in the marketplace. I expect this problem will improve itself as podcasts support is new.
The next shitty thing is that the Zune is only supported on the Windows platform. Because of DRM, you must use the Zune software to load new data onto the player, and of course Microsoft isn't going to release a Mac or Linux program. I've read there are efforts to back engineer Linux support for the Zune, but thus far they are only to see the data but not add/delete.
That being said, I paid $85 for a 30GB mp3 player and should just stop bitchin'!

4th-Jun-2007 12:32 pm - Beelzebubba
As I mentioned Beelzebub in my last entry, I decided to look up Beelzebub on wikipedia. On the entry they have this cool picture:

This picture is a reference to Beelzebub's title of Lord of the Flies. Apparently this picture comes from a book entitled, "Dictionnaire Infernal". Awesomely, the "Dictionnaire Infernal" is a book on demonology that was published in 1818. The book sounds like it is an encyclopedia of demons. It sounds like it would be a cool book to read.

As a side note here is a picture of the Dead Milkmen's cool album "Beelzebubba"

7th-Mar-2007 09:31 am - 5 Reasons my new iPod kicks the ass of the two different Creative players I have owned

  1. When I'm listening to a podcast I can leave it in the middle, listen to something else, comeback and it starts off where I left it.

  2. When the headphones get ripped out of the jack, it pauses what you are listening to

  3. If I play a song from an album and have the iPod set to "Play All", it will skip to the next song

  4. It has a separate "Podcast" area under "Music"

  5. iTunes ACTUALLY downloads podcasts while not crashing, unlike 6 or 7 podcast receivers which I could name.

6th-Mar-2007 12:17 pm - Code Monkey

I was introduced to this cool song from the podcast Net@Nite. It's called "Code Monkey" by Jonathan Coulton. It's a really great tune and has awesome geek lyrics. It makes me feel better as I am coding in SQL as I listen to it.

Code Monkey get up get coffee
Code Monkey go to job
Code Monkey have boring meeting
With boring manager Rob
Rob say Code Monkey very diligent
But his output stink
His code not “functional” or “elegant”
What do Code Monkey think?
Code Monkey think maybe manager want to write god damned login page himself
Code Monkey not say it out loud
Code Monkey not crazy, just proud

Code Monkey like Fritos
Code Monkey like Tab and Mountain Dew
Code Monkey very simple man
With big warm fuzzy secret heart:
Code Monkey like you

Code Monkey hang around at front desk
Tell you sweater look nice
Code Monkey offer buy you soda
Bring you cup, bring you ice
You say no thank you for the soda cause
Soda make you fat
Anyway you busy with the telephone
No time for chat
Code Monkey have long walk back to cubicle he sit down pretend to work
Code Monkey not thinking so straight
Code Monkey not feeling so great

Code Monkey like Fritos
Code Monkey like Tab and Mountain Dew
Code Monkey very simple man
With big warm fuzzy secret heart:
Code Monkey like you
Code Monkey like you a lot

Code Monkey have every reason
To get out this place
Code Monkey just keep on working
See your soft pretty face
Much rather wake up, eat a coffee cake
Take bath, take nap
This job “fulfilling in creative way”
Such a load of crap
Code Monkey think someday he have everything even pretty girl like you
Code Monkey just waiting for now
Code Monkey say someday, somehow

Code Monkey like Fritos
Code Monkey like Tab and Mountain Dew
Code Monkey very simple man
With big warm fuzzy secret heart:
Code Monkey like you

5th-Mar-2007 03:45 pm - Weasel

I'm not a Blink182 fan, but I just read they did a cover of Screeching Weasel's song "The Girl Next Door". I knew they had covered a song by S.W., just not which one. I remember at the time, Ben Weasel said they had almost made more money off the royalties from Blink182 covering that song than they had during their career, which is an indictment of the whole industry. Lyrics:

White girl living in the big city
In a big apartment house
She's living with her boyfriend now

She drives off every day for school and work
She washes dishes now
And watches tv on the pull out couch

And every day's the same

White girl moved back to the suburbs
And she finally found a man
Who knows how to take care of her

She bought the perfect little house
And the lawn's well manicured
And she'd never missed a day of work

And every day's the same

White girl couldn't go on knowing
She was just here wasting her time
She drowned in the lake last night

They found her bloated body floating
But she still walks around
Performing all her daily chores

She still don't know what life's about

Cause every day's the same
And she's got no one to love
